Build Safety Systems & Culture

Workshops

Problem-solving workshops are typically based on findings from interviews and initial survey results in a preliminary phase with the organization. Paradigm will facilitate an in-person workshop with key decision makers and employees. The objectives will be to understand barriers to safety culture, generate a library of ideas for potential solutions, identify next steps, and increase interest in active participation in your organizations safety program.

Common focus areas include:

Typically, participants will be divided into groups (hourly representatives, salaried: supervisors, managers) that will participate in a 3-hour workshop. Participants will be asked to engage in a variety of activities and conversations that will be captured through note-taking.

Where do we want to go?

Leadership Team: Paradigm will issue the leadership team an online survey to assess perceptions of safety performance (to be anonymous). Results will be tabulated and then discussed in a team meeting prior to onsite work. Paradigm and partner will discuss big-picture safety program goals and define what success will look like. From here, we will define the key players who will play an active role in the grass-root efforts to reshape safety at partner’s organization.

Pre-Visit Document Review and Discussion: Paradigm will review relevant documents in advance of the site visit.

Where are we now?

Employee interviews & culture survey: We know there is a link between a positive and proactive safety culture and the safety performance within an organization. Through employee responses, the survey will identify areas of cultural strength and weaknesses, gain insight into perceptions of safety, and beliefs around management support of safety systems, and indicate if the partner’s policies are being practiced in daily work.

The primary categories for evaluation include leadership, safety feedback, behaviors, and safety systems. Paradigm will identify gaps between beliefs and observed behaviors.

TESTIMONIAL

“This workshop was a great way to open my eyes to new ideas and new ways of looking at our work centers. It provided training in evaluations that I will be able to use in my presentations to management to incite real change. This was a great use of time!”
